Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon is returning to her most famous role for a third time. Deadline is reporting that the actress is close to making a deal to once again play Elle Woods in Legally Blonde 3.
MGM is developing the project with original writers Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith and Karen McCullah working on the script. Producers Marc Platt and Adam Siegel will also return, with Witherspoon producing through her Hello Sunshine production company.
Legally Blonde was released in the summer of 2001 and became a surprise hit. The film made an instant superstar out of Witherspoon and went on to gross $141 million.
The film became a cult favorite, leading to the sequel Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde, as well as, a stage musical that has had successful runs on Broadway and touring nationally.
In the movie, Witherspoon stars as Elle Woods, a sorority girl who loves pink and unexpectedly finds success when she follows her boyfriend to Harvard Law School.
Witherspoon can be seen in the upcoming second season of HBO’s Big Little Lies, as well as, co-starring Jennifer Aniston’s new series about a morning talk show.
